Dear Student,
(a) we could take 9.0V emf to mean an energy difference of 9 joules/coulomb between the positive and negative terminals of the battery. That is to say, you could consider the battery to be a charge pump that is capable of doing a work of 9 joules per coulomb of charge if sent from one terminal to the other.

(b) Current across Z is IZ= 2.5-1.7 = 0.8 A
and potential difference = VZ = 9 V ( As potential difference across parallel resistor remains constant)
