Dear student,
a) As per the noted experimental values, it can be seen that as the height from which the stone was released is increased, distance moved by the can also increases. So they both are directly proportional.
b) As stone was initially at rest, it had potential energy. On releasing it converted to kinetic energy. The can was first at rest so had potential energy, which then converted to kinetic energy on moving the distance.
